Martin Atherton is Course Leader for Deaf Studies at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in Preston, Lancashire. He graduated from UCLan with a BA in Deaf Studies and History in 1997 and his PhD in History from De Montfort University, Leicester was awarded in May 2005 for research into the leisure and sporting history of Deaf Club members in north-west England, 1945-1995. Martin originally joined the Deaf Studies team in 1998 as Principal Researcher on the Deaf United project and since then, he has developed his interests in the social and cultural history of deaf people in Britain through various research projects and publications. He has published articles and book chapters on various aspects of deaf history, as well as co-editing a book on policy and research relating to deaf students in UK Higher Education Institutions. He teaches modules on Deaf Community and Culture; The Signing Family; History, Politics and Deafness and Conducting Qualitative Research in the Deaf Community.
